A small smile here, a dainty wave there. At a glance, Sylvia appears as a well mannered and polite young lady with an eye and appreciation for culture and tradition. Speaks when spoken to and listens the right amount. Overall trying her best to uphold her grandmother’s teachings,(as outdated as they are.) Choosing to adhere to social norms and living her life as simply as possible. Rules were obviously made to be followed. Underneath her practiced surface lies a negative quintessence that believes in the worst. Sensitive by nature, she fears any attack on her mental or emotional being, and is very prone to overthinking scenarios and fussing around measures to prevent them. Finding it better to diminish her own expectations of anything and everything from the get go to elevate future disappointments. Thinking it absolutely futile to pursue ambitions out of reach, and would much rather spend her time satisfying herself with things in sight.

Background:
Father a policeman, mother a chinese dancer. Sylvia was born and raised in the rural areas of China steeped in tradition. Where old fashioned familial thinking showed preference for sons. And Sylvia’s were of no exception. Just imagine her parent’s disappointment when their firstborn was a girl. Nonetheless, with the surplus of family members under the roof, Sylvia’s childhood was nothing short of comfortable. Thrust under her beloved grandmother’s care and groomed to be a proper, well-cultured lady surrounded by herbal tea and old strings music. The ability to cook, clean, and present herself were ingrained since young. Despite occasionally translating the old woman’s efforts as a glorified way to ‘shut up and look pretty’, she truly did love her for all the time and attention, and sought to make her proud.

Unfortunately her simple, stressless life was shattered when news of war broke out. Her parents took off with their family, moving off to Argent where their children could grow up in a safer place. Somewhere along the road, her grandmother succumbed to air pollutants and passed away. Between losing her only closest family member, and the culture shock of being dragged away from a village into a huge city, Sylvia was furious. She was never a rebellious or ungrateful child, and never has she ever threw a tantrum from all the unequal treatment. But her frustrations manifested itself in the form of unannounced house escapisms. Spending prolonged periods of time wandering out in Argent’s streets. Eventually seeing schools and expressing the desire to attend one alongside her brothers. Using grandmother’s death and the city’s cultural differences as a persuasion chip.

Her father signed up for government work to maintain their past living standards, as well as to better support the three children and their education. While mother juggled work and housekeeping. Sylvia finally has her old mundane schedule back. And life got just a little better. Wake up. Dress up. Go to school. Carry out chores. Cook. Rinse and repeat. But she’ll be fine. As long as she remembers grandmother’s teachings, she’ll always be fine.
